School-based Diversion

We have come to learn that our youth are at risk because our communities are at risk. Through our involvement in the communities of Stellenbosch and the surrounding areas and farms, Usiko strives to turn adversity and risk to challenge, that challenge to personal growth and development, that growth into a healthy community. The mission of Usiko Stellenbosch is to provide healing and restoration for disempowered, vulnerable youth who are at risk, through the use of indigenous wisdom and practices.  Usiko intends to development and transform youth at risk and youth in conflict with the law by enabling and uplifting youth through guided rites of passage into responsible and active participants in their community.

The school-based diversion programme address the practical needs of disadvantaged youth by providing a range of remedial, preventive and development programmes over an intensive 18 month period. In this programme participants are supported in their journey to adulthood through a series of wilderness-based activities and other interventions focusing on developing self-esteem, personal growth and identity, leadership development and life planning.
